Nik Ooi, AGNP, PMHNP
Double Board-Certified Nurse Practitioner in Adult-Gerontology and Psychiatric Mental Health

Nik Ooi is a compassionate and skilled nurse practitioner, bringing a wealth of experience to Randolph Clinic since beginning his advanced practice in 2018. Double board-certified in Psychiatric Mental Health and Adult-Gerontology, Nik excels in treating conditions like bipolar disorder, major depression, generalized anxiety, and schizophrenia. He performs most of his own psychotherapy, favoring it over medication-heavy approaches—unlike some psychiatric practices that lean on prescriptions when unsure of another provider’s therapy outcomes. Nik strives to reduce medication use, integrating natural supplements like omega-3s, magnesium, or St. John’s wort when suitable, and respects alternative holistic therapies such as acupuncture, mindfulness meditation, and herbal remedies. It wouldn’t be a surprise to find yourself learning from Nik important meditation techniques to manage certain mental health disorders, given his knack for empowering patients with practical, mind-body tools. Research shows this unified, therapy-focused care improves outcomes by fostering stronger bonds and coordination (Psychiatric Services, 2015; Journal of Clinical Psychiatry, 2018). His geriatric expertise further enhances his work, delivering precise, life-affirming care for adults 65 and older. Specialized Experience in Memory Care For two years, Nik worked in a memory clinic, serving over 200 patients with suspected or diagnosed dementia. He ordered serum testing for biomarkers and arranged dementia-specific brain radiology, collaborating with specialists to provide early detection and tailored care plans. This hands-on experience deepened his ability to support patients and families navigating cognitive challenges. Championing the Underserved Nik’s dedication reaches far beyond traditional healthcare settings. He spent two years working with the homeless population, delivering street medicine, and providing care in shelters and meal sites. He has also served underserved communities across Washington, DC, Northern Virginia, and Maryland, including offering free clinics at churches and Buddhist temples. These efforts reflect his passion for bridging gaps in care, bringing health and hope to diverse populations with empathy and ingenuity. A Foundation in Nursing Nik’s journey began as a registered nurse, where he honed his skills in high-stakes environments—ICU, Emergency Department, and Cardiac Units—at Martha Jefferson Sentara Hospital in Charlottesville and Inova Mount Vernon Hospital in Alexandria. His five years volunteering and working in a 190-bed nursing home and hospice facility in DC further fueled his focus on geriatrics, blending clinical care with emotional support for patients and caregivers. Education and Roots Nik earned his nurse practitioner degrees from The Catholic University of America in Washington, DC, and Wilkes University in Pennsylvania. Originally from Malaysia, he spent a decade in Vancouver, Canada, before settling in Virginia in 2003. This global perspective enriches his holistic approach, making him a trusted advocate for diverse patients. Why Nik Stands Out With a nursing background rooted in nurturing and a career spanning memory care, underserved populations, and mental health, Nik offers a rare blend of expertise and heart. Whether he’s interpreting diagnostic tests or sitting with a patient in crisis, Nik’s mission is clear: to empower every individual toward health and dignity, one compassionate encounter at a time.

WHO WE ARE AND WHAT WE DO

What is an AGNP?
(from the American Association of Nurse Practitioners)

The role of the Adult-Gerontology Nurse Practitioner (AGNP) is to assess, diagnose and plan for the health needs of all adults, from young adults to seniors. Many AGNPs work in long-term care settings, hospital-based clinics and private practices, which may require them to obtain medical histories, perform physical examinations, order screening tests, interpret diagnostic tests and administer age-appropriate pharmacological and non-pharmacological therapies. AGNPs may also manage transitions between care settings, provide patient and caregiver education and evaluate caregiver competence. When providing care, AGNPs consider the environmental, occupational, social and economic background of patients.

What is a PMHNP?

(from the American Association of Nurse Practitioners)

The role of a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) is to assess, diagnose, and treat the mental health needs of patients. Many PMHNPs provide therapy and prescribe medications for patients who have mental health disorders or substance abuse problems. PMHNPs may also provide physical and psychosocial assessments, emergency psychiatric care and treatment effectiveness evaluations.
